Falciparum malaria complicated with acute pancreatitis: a report of case series.

چکیده
Clinical manifestations of malaria cover a wide range of symptoms. Although most infected individuals will only have a relatively benign febrile illness, 1–3 million deaths per year occur due to severe malaria world wide1. This comprises severe syndromes such as cerebral malaria, severe anaemia, jaundice, renal failure, acute respiratory disstress syndrome etc. either alone or in combination2. Out of 4 species of Plasmodium that cause human malaria, Plasmodium falciparum cases have the potentiality of developing all these complications and almost all deaths have been ascribed to falciparum malaria1. Though during the course of the disease, it affects different organ systems of the body causing various complications, little is known about pancreatitis. Hence, acute pancreatitis has been described as a rare complication of falciparum malaria3. In view of rarity, we describe a series of 3 cases of falciparum malaria with acute pancreatitis.

CONTEXT Acute pancreatitis is most commonly linked to gallstone disease or alcohol consumption. Occasionally it can follow infectious disease. Malaria, especially Plasmodium falciparum infection, has been associated with acute pancreatitis. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 17-year-old male who presented with a history of fever, abdominal pain and hypotension and revealing acute pancreatit...
متن کاملAcute pancreatitis due to malaria: A case report of five patients and review of literature
Malaria is endemic in large parts of India and can cause multiorgan failure and death. Acute pancreatitis as a complication is rare and is potentially fatal. This case series describes five adult patients between 2005 and 2010 who presented with a short duration febrile illness and diagnosed to have malaria with acute pancreatitis. The mean age of the five patients with acute pancreatitis was 4...

Background: Renal failure is a complication of severe malaria, and rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria is an uncommon cause. We report an unusual case of severe falciparum malaria with dengue coinfection complicated by acute renal failure and myoglobinemia, myoglobinuria but a normal creatine kinase (CK).
متن کاملFalciparum malaria presenting as acute pancreatitis.
Falciparum malaria is a protozoan disease caused by Plasmodium falciparum transmitted by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. This is a very common disorder in the tropics associated with myriad complications. We are presenting here acute pancreatitis as a sole presentation in a 35-yr old tribal man infected with falciparum malaria with high parasitemia. Acute pancreatitis is a well-known...
متن کاملAcute pancreatitis and ARDS complicating Plasmodium vivax malaria.
We read with interest the case report on acute pancreatitis due to vivax malaria1. We have few observations on the same. The authors reported that similar cases have not been reported. In fact, multiple case reports have implicated Plasmodium falciparum as a cause of acute pancreatitis. Also, a previous report from India had first implicated P. vivax as a cause of acute pancreatitis in a young ...
